Word Problems on Addition of Money

Let us consider some of the word problems on addition of money. We have solved the problems in both the methods i.e., with conversion into paise and without conversion into paise.

Worked-out examples on addition of money:

1. Add Rs. 27.75 and Rs. 40.08

Solution:

Method 1 (with conversion into paise):

Amounts to be added are converted into paise.

Rs. 27.75 = 2700 paise + 75 paise = 2775 paise

Rs. 40.08 = 4000 paise + 08 paise = 4008 paise

Now, sum

                                  Rs. 27.75               =              2775       Paise

                           +     Rs. 40.08               =    +        4008       Paise
                                                                                6783       Paise

Therefore, sum of Rs. 27.75 and Rs. 40.08  =    Rs. 67.83

Method 2 (without conversion into paise):

Here rupees and paise are arranged in different columns and then added like ordinary numbers.

                                                                              Rs           Paise

                                Rs. 27.75              =               27            75

                        +      Rs. 40.08              =      +       40            08
                                                                              67            83

Therefore, sum of Rs. 27.75 + Rs. 40.08  =  Rs. 67.83

2. Add Rs. 125.65, Rs. 38.48 and Rs. 110.05

Solution:

Method 1 (with conversion into paise):

Amounts to be added are converted into paise.

Rs. 125.65 = 12500 paise + 65 paise = 12565 paise

Rs. 38.48 = 3800 paise + 48 paise = 3848 paise

Rs. 110.05 = 11000 paise + 05 paise = 11005 paise

Now, sum

               Rs. 125.65            =            12565    Paise

               Rs. 38.48              =             3848    Paise

      +       Rs. 110.05             =    +     11005   Paise
                                                         27418    Paise

Therefore, sum of 125.65, Rs. 38.48 and Rs. 110.05 = Rs. 274.18

Method 2 (without conversion into paise):

Here rupees and paise are arranged in different columns and then added like ordinary numbers.

                                Rs.         Paise

                                125         65

                                 38         48

                        +      110         05
                                274         18

Therefore, sum of 125.65 + Rs. 38.48 + Rs. 110.05 = Rs. 274.18

3. If the cost of a cricket bat is Rs. 251.35 and that of badminton racket is Rs. 197.50. Find the total cost of both.

Solution:

Cost of a cricket bat                            Rs 251.35

Cost of badminton racket                  + Rs 197.50

Total cost of both                                 Rs 448.85

4. If a story book costs Rs. 42.00 and a pen costs Rs. 10 less than the story book. Find the cost of both the items?

Solution:

Cost of a story book                                     Rs 42.00

Cost of a pen (42.00 - 10.00)                    + Rs 32.00

Total cost of both the items                          Rs 74.00
