Word problems to simplify decimals involving addition and subtraction decimals:

2. What must be added to 19.63 to obtain 57.87?

Solution:

Let x be added to 19.63 to obtain 57.87

i.e. 19.63 + x = 57.87

⇒ 19.63 + x - 19.63 = 57.87 - 19.63 (subtract from both sides)

⇒ x = 38.24

Therefore, 38.24 must be added to 19.63 to obtain 57.87.

3. What must be subtracted from 381.6 to obtain 28.88?

Solution:

Let x be subtracted from 381.6 to obtain 28.88

i.e., 381.6 - x = 28.88

⇒ x = 381.6 - 28.88

⇒ x = 352.72

Therefore, 352.72 must be subtracted from 381.60 to obtain 28.88.
