Adding Tens and Ones

We will learn adding tens and ones.

Basic Ones and Tens Blocks:

Following are the examples of Basic Ones and Tens Blocks:

Basic Ones and Tens Blocks

Look at the picture and complete the following sentence.

This picture has _____ ones and _____ Tens.

oh! Yes, there are 8 ones and 2 Tens in this picture.

Every number can be represented by using Basic Blocks.

Now fill-up these boxes. One has been completed for you.

(i)

Tens and Ones Blocks

is representing the number 36.

(ii)

Tens and Ones Blocks Number

is representing the number ____.

(iii)

Number Tena and Ones Blocks

is representing the number ____.

(iv)

Draw the basic blocks to represent the number 81.

(v)

Draw the basic blocks to represent the number 27.

Larger numbers can be easily added by using Basic Blocks of Tens and Ones.

Let us add 51 and 28.

51 = 5 tens and 1 ones.

28 = 2 tens and 8 ones.

We represent these numbers by the following pictures.

Numbers Addition Blocks

Counting ones together and tens together, we get

Addition using Number Blocks

Thus, we get 51 + 28 = 79

Similarly, we can add 23 and 45.

23 = 2 tens and 3 ones.

45 = 4 tens and 5 ones.

We represent these numbers by the following pictures.

Addition Blocks

Counting ones together and tens together, we get

Addition using Blocks

Thus, we get 23 + 45 = 68.
