What Is the 5 Times Table?
The 5 times table shows what happens when we multiply 5 by different whole numbers. Multiplication is a quick way to add equal groups together.
For example, 5 × 3 means 3 equal groups of 5. We can write this as repeated addition: 5 + 5 + 5 = 15. Therefore, 5 × 3 = 15.
Example: 5 × 5 Means Five Groups of Five
Imagine that there are 5 plates, with 5 cookies on each plate. How many cookies are there altogether?
Repeated Addition:
5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 25
Multiplication:
5 × 5 = 25
How Does Repeated Addition Help?
Each new group adds 5 more. For example:
- 5 × 1 = 5
- 5 × 2 = 5 + 5 = 10
- 5 × 3 = 5 + 5 + 5 = 15

The 5 times table has simple patterns that make multiplication easier to learn. Look at the last digit of each answer, count forward by 5, and compare the 5 times table with the 10 times table.
1. Pattern in the Ending Digits
Every whole-number multiple of 5 ends in either 0 or 5. The ending digits alternate between 5 and 0 as you move down the table.
Remember: If a whole number is a multiple of 5, its last digit is 0 or 5.
2. Skip Counting by 5s
Skip counting means adding the same number each time. Start at 0 and add 5 repeatedly to learn the 5 times table.
Each number is 5 more than the number before it. For example, after 20 comes 25 because 20 + 5 = 25.
3. Relationship Between the 5 and 10 Times Tables
Multiplying a number by 5 gives half the result of multiplying the same number by 10. This is because 5 is half of 10.
