Bills and Price Chart

We will learn how to prepare a bill and price chart.

When you buy something, the shopkeeper gives you a list. This is called a bill. A bill is a very important part of buying and selling.

Look a the following example:

1. Nancy went to a stationery shop with her mother. She bought the following items for her new school year. Look at the bill prepared by the shopkeeper.

Solution:

Now, observe the bill and answer the following questions:

(i) How much did Rachna's mother pay for the items she bought?

(ii) If she returns the set of crayons, then how much will be her bill?

(iii) For which item did she pay the most?

(iv) How many items did Rachna buy?

You are able to answer all the questions correctly and quickly because the shopkeeper made a bill mentioning the items bought, quantities and rates.

If you look at the bill carefully, you will notice that the following important things are missing.

• Name and address of the shop

• Date of purchase

Bill number

 Signature of the shopkeeper


All these are parts of a bill. If you are not happy with what you purchased, you should be able to go back to the same shop with the bill and return it.

2. Ashley and Emily went to a coffee shop. Ashley ordered 1 cup of hot coffee, 2 club sandwiches and 1 plate french fries. Emily ordered 1 cold coffee and 3 coleslaw sandwiches. Find the total amount they paid together using the given rate list and the bill.

(ii) Jonathan had ₹ 500 with him. He bought 7 marker pens for 25 each, 4 erasers for ₹ 12.50 each, 4 long exercise books for ₹ 30 each and a stapler for ₹ 65.50. Make a bill for him. What balance would he get?
