Ascending Order and Descending Order

Look at the number line below. The number 6 which is on the right side of the number 5 is a greater number. The number 5 which is on the left side of number 6 is the smaller number.

The numbers on the number line is in increasing order. 

The arrangement of numbers from smallest to greatest is called ascending order.

The arrangement of numbers from greatest to smallest is called descending order.


1. Write the numbers in ascending and descending order.

Descending order

Arrange the numbers in descending order.

(ii) 20, 19, 18, 17, 16

(iii) 19, 18, 17, 16, 15

(iv) 16, 15, 14, 13, 12


Ascending order

Arrange the numbers in ascending order.

Ascending Order

Answer:

(i) 11, 12, 13, 14, 15

(ii) 10, 12, 15, 16, 18

(iii) 12, 13, 16, 17, 19

(iv) 10, 11, 15, 19, 20
