Subtraction of 3-Digit Numbers using Expanded Form

Here we will learn subtraction of 3-digit numbers using expanded form.

Express each number in expanded form, then subtract the ones, tens and hundred place.

Let's try to solve the following example:

1. Subtract 356 from 768.

Solution:

First we need to express the number 356 and 768 in expanded form.

Expanded form of 356

356 = 3 hundreds + 5 tens + 6 ones

and

Expanded form of 768

768 = 7 hundreds + 6 tens + 8 ones

Now we subtract the expanded form:

         768      =     7 hundreds  +  6 tens  +  8 ones

       - 356      = -  3 hundreds  +  5 tens  +  6 ones

    Difference  =    4 hundreds  +  1 ten    +  2 ones   = 412

Therefore, 768 - 356 = 412

2. Subtract 324 from 965.

Solution:

First we need to express the number 324 and 965 in expanded form.

Expanded form of 324

324 = 3 hundreds + 2 tens + 4 ones

and

Expanded form of 965

965 = 9 hundreds + 6 tens + 5 ones

Now we subtract the expanded form:

         965      =     9 hundreds  +  6 tens  +  5 ones

       - 324      = -  3 hundreds  +  2 tens  +  4 ones

    Difference  =    6 hundreds  +  4 tens   +  1 ones   = 641

Therefore, 965 - 324 = 641

3. Subtract 210 from 649.

Solution:

First we need to express the number 210 and 649 in expanded form.

Expanded form of 210

210 = 2 hundreds + 1 ten + 0 ones

and

Expanded form of 649

649 = 6 hundreds + 4 tens + 9 ones

Now we subtract the expanded form:

         649      =     6 hundreds  +  4 tens  +  9 ones

       - 210      = -  2 hundreds  +  1 ten    +  0 ones

    Difference  =    4 hundreds  +  3 tens   +  9 ones   = 439

Therefore, 649 - 210 = 439

4. Subtract 465 from 798.

Solution:

First we need to express the number 465 and 798 in expanded form.

Expanded form of 465

465 = 4 hundreds + 6 tens + 5 ones

and

Expanded form of 798

798 = 7 hundreds + 9 tens + 8 ones

Now we subtract the expanded form:

         798      =     7 hundreds  +  9 tens  +  8 ones

       - 465      = -  4 hundreds  +  6 tens  +  5 ones

    Difference  =    3 hundreds  +  3 tens  +  3 ones   = 333

Therefore, 798 - 465 = 333
