Expanded Form of Numbers

The way of writing a number as the sum of the place values of its digits is called the expanded form of numbers.


Consider the numeral 478:

We know that:      478

                       = 4 hundreds + 7 tens + 8 ones

                       = 400 + 70 + 8

                       = 478.

400 + 70 + 8 is the expanded form of 478.


478 is the short form of 400 + 70 + 8.
