The Number 1000

We will learn about the number 1000.

The greatest 1-digit number is 9.

The greatest 2-digit number is 99.

The greatest 3-digit number is 999.

The smallest 1-digit number is 0.

The smallest 2-digit number is 10.

The smallest 3-digit number is 100.

If we add 1 to the greatest number, we get the smallest number of the next series of numbers.

So, if we add 1 to 999, we get 999 + 1 = 1000, the smallest 4-digit number. We read 1000 as one thousand. Let us form 1000 with blocks of ones, tens and hundreds.

9 hundreds + 10 tens = 10 hundreds is called 1000.
