Subtraction of Hours, Minutes and Seconds

We will discuss here about the subtraction of hours, minutes and seconds.

Let us consider some of the examples on subtracting time.

1. Subtract 24 hr. 15 min. 38 sec. from 45 hr. 20 min. 54 sec.

Subtraction of Hours

We subtract hours, minutes and seconds respectively.

2. Subtract 5 hr. 16 min. 48 sec. from 12 hr. 28 min. 16 sec.

Subtraction of Hours and Minutes

16 sec. < 48 sec.

So, we borrow 1 min.

= 60 sec. From 28 min.

60 sec. + 16 sec. = 76 sec.

76 sec. – 48 sec. = 28 sec.

3. Subtract 14 hr. 46 min. 32 sec. from 22 hr. 28 min. 17 sec.

Subtracting Time

17 sec. < 32 sec.

So, we borrow 1 min.

= 60 sec. from 28 min.

60 sec. + 17 sec. = 77 sec.

77 sec. – 32 sec. = 45 sec.

27 min < 46. So we borrow 1 hr.

= 60 min . from 22 hr.

60 min. + 27 min. = 87 min.

87 min – 46 min. = 41 min.

4. Subtract 20 hr. 52 min. 46 sec. from 40 hr. 19 min. 20 sec.

Subtract Hours Minutes

20 sec. < 46 sec.

So, we borrow 1 min.

= 60 sec. from 19 min.

60 sec. + 20 sec. = 80 sec.

80 sec. - 46 sec. = 36 sec.

18 min < 52 min.

So we borrow 1 hr.

= 60 min . from 40 hr.

60 min. + 18 min. = 78 min.

78 min - 52 min. = 26 min.
