Minuend and Subtrahend

We will learn about the meaning of minuend and subtrahend.

The larger number from which smaller number is subtracted is called the minuend.

The smaller number which is subtracted is called subtrahend.

  4629       → Minuend

-1213       → Subtrahend

  3416      → Difference

The resulting number is called the difference.

Subtraction of five-digit and six digit numbers:

We know how to subtract 3-digit and 4-digit numbers. Now we will learn to subtract larger numbers.

Consider the following examples:

1. Subtract 24765 from 48876

Solution:

Arrange the digit of the minuend and subtrahend in columns and subtract as usual.

  48876       → Minuend

 -24765       → Subtrahend

  24111       → Difference

The difference is 24111.

2. Subtract 54874 from 86246

Solution:

Arrange the digit of the minuend and subtrahend in columns and subtract as usual.

  86246       → Minuend

 -54874       → Subtrahend

  31372       → Difference

The difference is 31372.

3. Subtract 257087 from 764392

Solution:

Arrange the digit of the minuend and subtrahend in columns and subtract as usual.

  764392       → Minuend

 -257087       → Subtrahend

  507305       → Difference

The difference is 507305.

4. Subtract 462774 from 907254

Solution:

Arrange the digit of the minuend and subtrahend in columns and subtract as usual.

  907254        → Minuend

 -462774       → Subtrahend

  444480       → Difference

The difference is 444480.

5. Subtract 234652 from 897469

Solution:

Arrange the digit of the minuend and subtrahend in columns and subtract as usual.

  897469       → Minuend

 -234652       → Subtrahend

  662817       → Difference

The difference is 662817.

6. Subtract 428697 from 746859

Solution:

Arrange the digit of the minuend and subtrahend in columns and subtract as usual.

  746859        → Minuend

 -428697        → Subtrahend

  318162        → Difference

The difference is 318162.

Note:

                          A number – 0 = The number itself

                          Subtrahend + Difference = Minuend

                          Minuend – Difference = Subtrahend

Word problems on minuend and subtrahend:

Jenny had $48389 in her bank account. She withdrew $39498. How much amount is left in her bank account?

Solution:

She had in her bank account                =   $48389

She withdraw from her bank account     = - $39498

The amount left in her account              =   $ 8891

So, the amount left in her account         =   $ 8891
