Worksheet on expanded form and short form helps students clearly understand place value by practicing how to break numbers into expanded form and write them back in short (standard) form. The exercises are carefully graded to support learners from basic to more advanced levels.
It includes simple and engaging questions where learners break numbers into thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones, and also combine expanded numbers to form standard numbers. This worksheet builds strong number sense and improves confidence in reading and writing numbers. These worksheets are suitable for classroom practice, homework, revision, and homeschooling.
Designed for Classes 1 to 5, the questions progress from simple 2-digit numbers to larger numbers in both the Indian and International place value systems. An answer key is included to help students check their work and improve accuracy.
Regular practice with these worksheets strengthens number sense, builds confidence in place value concepts, and improves overall mathematical skills.
Expanded form of a number is the sum of the place values of its digits.
Look at the given examples.
145 = 1 hundred + 4 tens + 5 ones = 100 + 40 + 5
182 = 1 hundred + 8 tens + 2 ones = 100 + 80 + 2
105 = 1 hundred + 5 ones = 100 + 5
193 = 1 hundred + 9 tens + 3 ones = 100 + 90 +3
To write the short form of an expanded number, we write the face value of each digit in the correct place.
Look at the given example.
The place value of 1 is 1 hundred. So, we write 1 at the hundreds place.
The place value of 2 is 2 tens. So, we write 2 at the tens place.
The place value of 8 is 8 ones. So, we write 8 at the ones place.
Similarly,
100 + 6 = 106
100 + 80 + 6 = 186
Quick Tip:
We can write a number in three different forms.

1. How do you write a number in expanded form?
Answer:
Follow these steps:
Identify the place value of each digit.
Write the value of each digit.
Add the values together.
Example:
487 = 400 + 80 + 7
2. What is an example of expanded form?
Answer:
Example:
Number: 764
Expanded form:
764 = 700 + 60 + 4
Each digit is written according to its place value.
3. Why is expanded form important for students?
Answer:
Expanded form helps students understand place value, which is an important concept in mathematics.
It helps children learn how numbers are built using ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands.
4. What is the difference between expanded form and word form?
Answer:
Expanded form shows the value of each digit using addition, while word form writes the number in words.
Example:
Number: 328
Expanded form: 300 + 20 + 8
Word form: Three hundred twenty-eight
5. How do you write a 4-digit number in expanded form?
Answer:
To write a 4-digit number in expanded form, break the number into thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones.
Example:
5,342 = 5,000 + 300 + 40 + 2
6. What grade level teaches expanded form?
Answer:
Expanded form is usually taught in Grade 2, Grade 3, and Grade 4 math when students learn about place value and number representation.
Students practice writing numbers in expanded form, standard form, and word form.
