6th Grade Worksheet on Numbers

βœ… The place value (or local value) of a digit in a number is the value of the digit, which is found using the place value chart.

For example, the place value of 5 in the number 835201 is 5 x 1,000 = 5,000.

βœ… The face value of a digit remains as it is, whatever place it may be occupying.

For example, the face value of 5 in the number 835201 is 5.

βœ… The number just next to a given number is called its successor.

For example, the successor of 835201 is 835202.

βœ… The number just before to a given number is called its predecessor.

For example, the predecessor of 835201 is 835200.

βœ… In the Indian System of Numeration, the numbers are grouped into the periods of ones, thousands, lakhs, crores, so on. The ones period has three places and the remaining periods have two places each.

βœ… In the International System of Numeration, the numbers are grouped into the periods of ones, thousands, millions, billions, so on. Each period has three places.

βœ… Estimation (Approximation) is a process to find approximate value. To find approximate value, we round off numbers to the nearest ten or nearest hundred or nearest thousand or so on.

βœ… To find an estimated sum or difference, we may round off each number to the highest place value of the smaller number.

βœ… To find an estimated product, round off each factor to its greatest place value and then multiply the rounded off factors

βœ… To find an estimated quotient, round off the dividend to the nearest multiple of the divisor.
