4-Digits by 1-Digit Multiplication

Here we will learn 4-digits by 1-digit multiplication. We know how to multiply three digit number by one digit number. In the same way we can multiply 4-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers without regrouping and with regrouping.

Multiplication of 4-digits Number by 1-digit Number Without Regrouping:

1. Multiply 3021 by 3.

Solution:

Step I: Arrange the numbers vertically.

Step II: Multiply the digit at the ones place by 3.

             1 × 3 = 3 ones

Step III: Now multiply the digit at the tens place by 3.

               2 × 3 = 6 tens

Step IV: Now multiply the digit at the hundreds place by 3.

             0 × 3 = 0 hundreds

Step V: Then multiply the digit at the thousands place by 3.

             3 × 3 = 9 thousands

Multiplication of 4-Digits by 1-Digit Multiplication

Thus, 3021 × 3 = 9063

Multiplication of 4-digits Number by 1-digit Number With Regrouping:

1. Multiply 3768 by 2.

Solution:

4-Digit by 1-Digit Multiply

Step I: Multiply the multiplier 2 with the ones place of 1 the multiplicand.

8 ones × 2 = 16 ones

Write 6 in the ones place and carry over 1 to tens place.

4-Digits Number by 1-Digit Number Multiplication

Step II: Multiply 2 with the tens place of the multiplicand.

6 tens × 2 = 12 tens

12 tens + 1 ten (carry over) = 13 tens

Write 3 in the tens place and carry over 1 to hundreds place.

Multiplication of 4-Digits Number by 1-Digit Number

Step III: Multiply 2 with the hundreds place of the multiplicand.

7 hundreds × 2 = 14 hundreds

14 hundreds + 1 hundreds (carry over) = 15 hundreds

Write 5 in the hundreds place and carry over 1 to thousands place.

4-Digits by 1-Digit Multiplication

Step IV: Multiply 2 with the thousands place of the multiplicand.

3 thousands × 2 = 6 thousands

6 thousands + 1 thousand (carry over) = 7 thousands

Write 7 in the thousands place.

Thus, 3768 × 2 = 7536
